When the pandemic hit, I found myself dependent on my elder’s bank account to make payments as the world moved towards cashless transactions. This transition not only made me realize the importance of having my own bank account, but I also experienced the frustration of my transactions no longer being private. It was unsettling to find out that 82% of women remain unbanked in Pakistan, as mobility is an issue for many, even in urban areas, due to patriarchal norms.
The absence of bank branches in close proximity for people living in geographically challenged locations and a lack of financial literacy are the two main barriers to opening a bank account. Moreover, Pakistan's conventional banking systems have a complex account opening process, and the use of digital banking is complex, so people rely heavily on physical bank branches. As a result, a significant percentage of the Pakistani population, especially women, remain unbanked.
